Equipped with 102 million pixel sensor! Ultra-high pixel mirrorless "GFX 100" feature report

The camera that was being developed as a 100 million pixel ultra high pixel model is finally here! Fujifilm announced on May 23, 2019 a new model "GFX 100" of mirrorless "GFX" series equipped with a large image sensor (released in late June). Here, let's introduce the detailed features with the information obtained at the new product presentation.

Employs a large format sensor with over 100 million pixels

The greatest feature of the GFX100 is that it is equipped with an ultra-high-pixel image sensor with "effective about 102 million pixels". Although some professional digital cameras have a pixel count exceeding GFX 100, Fujifilm is the world's highest pixel count at present as mirrorless for consumer use.
As with the GFX series GFX 50S and GFX 50R, the GFX 100 is equipped with a large format sensor of 43.8 (horizontal) x 32.9 (vertical) mm, which is about 1.7 times the size of a 35 mm full size. Although the pixel pitch is smaller than 5.3 μm of GFX 50S or GFX 50R and is 3.8 μm (equivalent to 35 mm full size sensor of 60 million pixels) because it exceeds 100 million pixels, high-speed readout is possible. By adopting the back-illuminated structure, it is possible to obtain high-sensitivity noise and excellent image quality in the dynamic range.

In-body camera shake correction with 5.5 steps of correction effect

The GFX100 features a large-sized sensor, and it is a feature that can not be overlooked that the in-body camera shake correction for 5-axis is realized. In order to move the large format sensor which is approximately twice as heavy as the 35 mm full size with high precision, it employs a drive motor with twice the torque performance as usual. The camera shake detected by the 3-axis acceleration sensor and 3-axis gyro sensor is calculated about 10,000 times per second using its own dedicated dual processor, achieving a high correction effect of up to 5.5 steps.
The large format sensor is also very inclined to the sensor. The GFX100 reduces the distortion tolerance of the sensor itself to about 20 μm in order to obtain focus accuracy, and realizes the extremely high accuracy of 5 μm for manufacturing tolerance of ceramic balls that support the image stabilization unit. .
In addition, because of the high pixel of over 100 million, vibration countermeasures are also unprecedented. The large shutter unit is equipped with suspensions on the left and right sides of the unit to absorb minute shocks. In addition, it is generated by shutter vibration while securing parallel flatness of the sensor and the mount surface by adopting a structure (inner frame method) in which the optical parts such as mount, camera shake correction unit, and image sensor are integrally hung. It is devised so that a blurring is suppressed as much as possible.
